Sustainable development

History

In 2020, the CPU (Conference of University Presidents) and the CNRS recognized the need to better consider the environmental impact of research laboratories.

Given the significance of this challenge, the CNRS and the CPU encouraged laboratory directors to address this issue by initiating discussions within research units on the environmental impact of their activities.

February 10, 2021: Creation of a carbon footprint reference unit within iSm2, initiated by Jean Rodriguez and originally composed of three members: Denis Hagebaum-Reignier (CTOM), Olga Iranzo (BiosCiences), and Adrien Quintard (STeRéo).

The first action was to establish a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory (BGES) using the methodology of the Labos1Point5 collective (https://labos1point5.org/). The unit contacted the Sustainable Development Directorate (DDD) of AMU and the Sustainable Development unit of DR12 at CNRS to discuss possible actions.

July 13, 2022: Presentation of the first BGES during the institute's annual event, with representatives from the DDD of AMU invited to present the university's sustainability initiatives.

2022-2023 Academic Year: The reference unit expanded to include a representative from each team in the institute, hygiene and safety personnel, an administrative staff representative, and doctoral/postdoctoral researchers. It became the iSm2 Sustainable Development Committee (CDD), which counted 14 members in 2024. A logo for the committee was created:

In addition to BGES reports, the CDD publishes a monthly "green letter" to raise awareness among institute personnel about the impact of professional and personal activities on CO2 emissions. Members also participate in sustainability-related activities offered by AMU and CNRS (workshops, conferences, training, etc.).
