History
In 2020, the CPU and CNRS became aware of the need to better consider the environmental impact of research laboratories.
Given the importance of this challenge, the CNRS and CPU encouraged laboratory directors to address this issue by initiating reflection within the units on the environmental impact of research activities.
February 10, 2021: creation of a carbon footprint reference unit within iSm2, driven by Jean Rodriguez, initially consisting of three people: Denis Hagebaum-Reignier (CTOM), Olga Iranzo (Biosciences), and Adrien Quintard (STeRéo).
The first action was to establish a GHG Inventory (Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory) using the methodology of the Labos1Point5 collective (https://labos1point5.org/). The unit contacted the Sustainable Development Department (DDD) of AMU and the DD unit of DR12 of CNRS to discuss actions to be taken.
July 13, 2022: presentation of the first GHG Inventory during the institute's day, and invitation of representatives from AMU's DDD to present the university's actions.
2022-2023 Academic Year: the reference unit expanded to include a representative from each team in the institute, hygiene and safety personnel, an administrative staff representative, and PhD/postdoc students. It became the Sustainable Development Committee (SDC) of iSm2 and counted 14 members in 2024. A committee logo was created:
In addition to GHG Inventories, the SDC publishes a monthly "green letter" to raise awareness among institute staff about the impact of professional and personal activities on CO2 emissions. Members also participate in sustainability actions proposed by AMU and CNRS (workshops, conferences, training, etc.).
