Presentation of ESOC 2013

Dear colleagues,

It is our privilege and great pleasure to welcome you to the 18th European Symposium of Organic Chemistry, in Marseille, France, organized by the “Institut des Sciences Moléculaires de Marseille” from Aix-Marseille Université.

This well-established conference is the largest scientific European event in organic chemistry. The symposium will provide an outstanding forum for broad scientific and technological exchanges among researchers from Europe and elsewhere in a friendly and warm atmosphere.

The topics centered on organic chemistry will cover frontier areas from physic to biology, highlighting the importance and ubiquity of this basic scientific area as a source of innovation for applications directed to the positive economic and healthy evolution of our society. We have paid much attention to set up an attractive scientific program and our intention is that the conference provides an excellent opportunity for younger scientists to learn about future trends and perspectives of organic chemistry in a multidisciplinary environment.

Marseille is the oldest city in France with a glorious, rich and turbulent history giving it a unique identity. The legend surrounding the origins of the city go back to 600 B.C., when it was founded by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name ‘Massalia’. Today, Marseille is the most important port in France and the second largest city and the first industrial place in the south of France but also one of the largest French pole of research and teaching. Being the Capital of the region Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur as well as the capital of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, Marseille is undoubtedly a cosmopolite city with an international calling. It is a gateway to all the Mediterranean Basin enjoying a very comfortable climate. In 2013, Marseille will be the European Capital of Culture with many events all the yearlong, which will constitute a very good opportunity to merge science and culture (visit web site).

We are very happy to be your host here in Marseille for this 18th ESOC 2013 during the concomitant celebration of the European Capital of Culture. The organizing committee and I, will provide a warm hospitality to all the participants. We will be very pleased to welcome all of you in Marseille for the 18th ESOC 2013 Meeting and we wish you a very pleasant stay.

On behalf of the organizing committee
